For each visitor to the ATHEN site/services, the ATHEN server automatically collects information about which pages are visited and the domain name (e.g., school.edu) of visitors. This information is used for internal review, to tailor information to individual visitors and for web site traffic audits.

ATHEN may place a "cookie" on the browser of your computer. The cookie itself contains your membership user name. A cookie may be used to tell whether your computer is authorized to visit the members-only sections of the ATHEN site/services. ATHEN may use this information so that it can customize the display of information to you without compromising privacy. For example, cookies may be used to save your personal preference for background color and text size.

Through your use of the ATHEN site/services, ATHEN may collect information about you that identifies you. Normally, you would provide such information when specifically asked to by ATHEN. Any information in ATHEN's possession solely as a result of your use of the ATHEN site/services and that is associated with you is considered "Personal Information." It consists of both information supplied by you (e.g., e-mail address) and information about how you use the ATHEN site/services. It does not include aggregate information or information that you have made public on the ATHEN site/services or that is otherwise publicly available. ATHEN does not share your clients personal information with any 3rd parties.

ATHEN uses Personal Information only for purposes necessary to provide the ATHEN site/services to you. These purposes include:

  • to process entry into the members-only sections of the ATHEN site/services, such as the directory or newsletter sections
  • to collect data on election or polling results
  • to personalize and publicize the ATHEN site/services based on your interests, including making you aware of editorial features, accommodation features, or communications activities
  • to investigate complaints and to protect the ATHEN site/services and ATHEN, its readers and members as provided by law or in case of emergency, as determined by legal counsel for ATHEN

ATHEN also respects the privacy of data on your personal computer and does not access, read, upload, or store data contained in or derived from your private files.
